Speakers

Michael Horan, Manager of Regulation & Policy Development, Insurance Ireland

Michael is the Non-Life Insurance Manager at Insurance Ireland. Michael’s role involves representing members’ interests to multiple stakeholders, including Government, the Central Bank of Ireland, public representatives, the media and at European level.

Prior to joining Insurance Ireland Michael held a variety of managerial roles at Royal Insurance in the UK over a nine year period.

 

John Foudy, Chair, Insurance Ireland Anti-Fraud Forum

 

John joined AIG as the Principal Investigator in our Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Feb 2018. He was appointed Team Leader in April 2022. John leads the SIU team, having responsibility for the investigation of suspicious / fraudulent insurance claims across all lines of business.

John has considerable investigation experience. Prior to joining AIG, he was a member of An Garda Síochána for 37 years. He was a Detective Inspector in the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau, retiring in January 2018.

John holds a BA in Public Administration (Law and the Administration of Justice) UCD, Postgraduate Diploma in Serious Crime Investigation, University of Limerick and Advanced Diploma in White Collar and Regulatory Crime, The Honorable Society of King’s Inns.

 

David Purcell, COO, Netwatch Global

 

David has been working in the investigation industry for seventeen years and now runs the day-to-day business operations at NetWatch Global.

 David co-founded NetWatch in 2013 as the UK’s first investigation agency solely focused on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), having seen the potential to deliver the information clients needed in less expensive and intrusive manner through OSINT. The company has grown steadily and looks set to exceed annual revenues of £2m within the next 12 months, regularly conducting investigations in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and the US.

 

Josh Bonser, Analyst Team Lead, NetWatch Global 

 

Josh has been with NetWatch Global for eight years, having started as an intern following his graduation from the University of Warwick, and worked his way up to his current role as the Analyst Team Lead, with responsibility for ensuring that the managed-service side of the business hits revenue targets and SLAs and that we are continually developing the team. 

I’m passionate about OSINT and during my career with NetWatch have seen it evolve from a niche activity practiced by a select group of researchers, to the multi-million pound industry it is today.    

  

Paul Kennedy, Detective Garda, Garda National Economic Crime Bureau

 

Paul Kennedy is a Detective Garda based in the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau. His current role is in the Insurance Fraud Coordination Office. He has been a member of An Garda Síochána for 7 years and has completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Fraud Investigation. Prior to joining An Garda Síochána he worked in Multimedia and Public Relations.

 

Shane Curtis, Detective Sargeant, Garda National Economic Crime Bureau

 

Shane is a Detective Sergeant based in the Assessment office in The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau with responsibility for the Assessment Unit, the Insurance Fraud Coordination Office and the Financial Services Liaison Office. 

I am a member of An Garda Síochána for 23 years. I spent 18 years in the Crumlin Garda District spending the majority of those years in the District Detective Unit and Drug Unit investigating serious crime which included Complex Fraud Investigations. On promotion in 2018 I transferred to the Blackrock (DMR) Garda District and in 2020 I moved to the Garda National Economic Crime. 

My role as Detective Sergeant within GNECB includes supervisory responsibility of the Insurance Fraud Co-ordination Office. I hold a Batchelor of Science in Management from Trinity College Dublin and a National Diploma in Police Studies. I have also completed the Fraud Investigation Course (awarded by Limerick Institute of Investigation), the Cyber Crime Invetigators Course (awarded by University College Dublin), and the Serious Crime Review Coures (awarded by the National Police Agency).

 

Shane English, Barrister-at-Law 

 

 Shane English BL, a defamation and insurance law specialist, was called to the Bar of Ireland in the Trinity term of 1996. He has been instructed by all the national newspapers in Ireland, including Sunday Business Post, Irish Examiner, Irish Independent and Irish Times. He has also acted on behalf of the national broadcaster, RTE, and many large corporate entities such as Ryanair, Kepak, Dublin Airport Authority, Dunnes Stores and Smurfit Kappa.

He works closely with individual print publications, reading for pre-publication libel, including for Irish Daily Star, Business Post and The Currency. He also acts for all of the major insurance undertakings in this jurisdiction.

Shane acted as Counsel for the Irish Examiner, Daniel McConnell, Juno McEnroe, Michael Clifford, Tim Vaughan and Cormac O’Keeffe in the “Tribunal of Enquiry into protected disclosures made under the Protected Disclosures Act, 2014 and certain other matter following Resolutions, otherwise known as the Charleton Tribunal”. He is a graduate of the Honourable Society of Kings Inns and Trinity College, Dublin.

 

Dr Matt Ormsby, Managing Director, Ormsby Forensics 

After completing his degree Matthew undertook a PhD focusing on premixed turbulent explosions at high pressures with a variety of fuels. He went on to work as a combustion researcher for Formula 1 race fuel development with a number of multinational fuel companies, and later worked as a research assistant on the European NATURALHY project measuring burning velocities of binary mixtures of methane and hydrogen at standard conditions. 

Matthew then moved to the forensic investigation industry, working as an associate investigator at Hawkings and Associates (UK). This work involved the investigation of fires and explosions throughout Ireland and Great Britain. During this time he liaised with major Insurers, Loss Adjusters, Loss Assessors, Garda, Garda Technical Bureau and Fire Brigades. He also completed work for private individuals. 

After establishing an extensive experience in forensic investigations, Matthew founded Ormsby Forensics in June 2012.

 

Graham Sinclair, Senior Adjuster, Davies Group

 

Graham is a conscientious and experienced Loss Adjustor who has worked in the insurance industry for over 20 years. With a vast understanding of property and contents claims, Graham specialises in handling high value jewellery claims via Davies Jewellery Specialist Division.

A CIP, APA, accredited advisor, Graham’s experience includes retail jewellery management giving him unrivalled expertise in dealing with high-end jewellery and watches and holds a Diploma Retail Jewellery.

Graham provides bespoke, accredited CPD lectures to the Insurance Industry.
