Background
The General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) will have a significant impact on Irish domestic insurers. This briefing will deliver insights into the major changes that will be introduced when the GDPR comes into force on 25 May 2018, in particular the impact on domestic insurers, brokers and consumers. The speakers will also discuss the steps that insurers should take in order to prepare for what will be the biggest change to data protection laws in over 20 years.

Eoin Caulfield is a Partner in William Fry’s Insurance Department. He joined the Firm in 1995. His practice involves a combination of insurance and reinsurance work, both on the non-life and life side, together with a general corporate and financial services client base.
Recent significant transactions include advising:
- AA plc on its sale of AA Ireland to Carlye Cardinal
- Banco Santander on its sale to CNP Assurance of a majority interest in its Irish cross-border insurance susidiaries
- Allied World, AXA, Markel (Alterra) and SCOR on various Court sanctioned mergers and amalgamations of Irish insurance and reinsurance activities
- Fidelity Worldwide Investment (FIL) and Santander Insurance on the authorisation of their Irish insurance companies

Eoin is a member of the Insurance Institute of Ireland; the British Insurance Law Association; and the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association. Recent speaking involvements include the Institute of Directors, Chartered Accountants Ireland and the commercial and business law courses at the Law Society of Ireland. In addition to his legal qualifications he holds an MBS (Financial Services) and an affiliation to the Society of Actuaries in Ireland.

John O’Connor is a Partner in William Fry’s Technology Group, the most experienced technology law team in the Irish market. He specialises in complex and large scale technology and outsourcing transactions including systems integration and implementation arrangements, licensing, IT and business process outsourcings and cloud services.
John is also a specialist in the area of privacy, data protection and cyber security law and advises on general compliance, data transfers, hosting, issue management and best practice. He has gained particular experience of advising technology, life sciences and financial services organisations on major outsourcings and on ‘big data’ projects including the procurement and deployment of FinTech.
