Insurance Ireland is pleased to invite you to the second edition of our Brussels Roundtables. On Wednesday, 23rd January 2019, we would like to discuss the question “Cybersecurity, a safety leash into the future?” with you. We are delighted that MEP Sean Kelly, James Caffrey (Policy Officer, SNE, at the European Commission DG CNECT H1) and industry expert Marko Hartwig (EMEA Chief Information Security Officer at Zurich) give us the honour to facilitate our debate.

Ensuring cybersecurity is one of the most pressing challenges the European society will be facing in the future. The increasing use of technology-based solutions and the relevance these solutions play in our economy, administration and daily life demand a strong and sustainable cybersecurity system. The European Commission presented a cybersecurity package. The measures which aim to enhance cyber resilience, foster international reliability, strengthen cyber defence and fight cybercrime are a strong push in the right direction. Establishing the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) as the new EU Cyber Security Agency is a milestone on this way.

However, institutional measures are insufficient if markets are unprepared, businesses and people are not aware of potential risks and no personal responsibility is taken. Therefore, the regulatory and institutional framework needs to be accompanied by trainings, the development of specific skills and innovations to create a tool-kit to prevent, react and answer cyber threats appropriately.

The insurance industry plays an important role in this process. Insurers are, already, providing risk cover to their customers for potential cyber threats and breaches of security procedures. As for many other risks, the insurance industry supports its customers in developing preventive measures and response mechanisms. The preventive measures and response mechanism are indispensable to reduce potential cyber threats in “quantity” and “quality” and to protect insurers’ customers and their customers likewise.
