Known unknowns: The macro context for a new phase in the pandemic

• The impact of COVID-19 has been dramatic, intrusive and sustained. But its global footprint means we can draw useful conclusions about its potential economic impact in Europe vs the US and the rest of the world.

• We remain in thrall to the virus, attempting to both release economies from lockdown and prevent damaging infection spikes in the process. Uncertainty is ever-present, but scenario planning and anticipation of the potential responses in Europe and beyond can offer a measure of visibility.

• This requires a detailed analysis of the pace and scale of potential measures from the ECB. We must also examine the fiscal options open to European governments – and the likely ripple effects into sovereign debt markets.

• Brexit never went away. And now this political experiment will reach a conclusion of sorts at a hugely difficult moment. The news headlines will follow a familiar dramatic pattern, but there are limited viable outcomes in play.
