Insurance Ireland in conjunction with William Fry would like to invite you to an in-person event, to be held in William Fry’s offices on Thursday, 9th of March 2023 from 8am to 10am.
The Insurance Industry and AI: Risks and Obligations – Barry Scannell, Consultant, William Fry will discuss the EU’s new AI Act and how uses by insurers may be treated high-risk, meaning greater regulation and consumer protection dimensions. Aspects of data protection law which are unique to AI profiling and automated decision making will be discussed. Barry will talk on the need for a “human in the loop” to avoid fully automated decision-making obligations and liability issues affecting AI systems and products.
Digital Transformation – European and Irish Regulatory Developments – Eoin Caulfield, Partner, Head of Insurance, William Fry will give an update on latest European and Central Bank of Ireland initiatives focusing on digital transformation, including the Central Bank’s recent discussion paper on modernising the Consumer Protection Code and EIOPA’s digital transformation strategy. This will include the role national competent authorities can play, such as regulatory sandboxes and increased participation in industry groups.
An Introduction to InsTech.ie – Gary Leyden, CEO, InsTech.ie will update on latest developments in the delivery of the InsTech.ie mission and its three key pillars: driving innovation capability and talent within Ireland’s insurance firms, making Ireland a destination of choice for international insurtech start-ups establishing in the EU and building a pipeline of insurtechs capable of competing internationally.
Barry Scannell, Consultant, Technology Group, William Fry
Barry specialises in artificial intelligence (AI), Emerging Tech, IP, technology law and data protection.
Barry is the former Director of Legal Affairs & Regulatory Compliance of one of Ireland’s leading music organisations, and has specialist knowledge and expertise in copyright law, with very strong music industry experience, particularly in the area of music licensing and media contracts.
Barry is a leading expert in the area of AI law and is currently researching a PhD on AI & copyright. He has Chaired and sat on various international industry committees dealing with AI, data protection and copyright. He currently sits on the Law Society of Ireland’s IP & Technology Committee, the Irish Digital Health Leadership Steering Group and the National AI RAD Working Group. His clients include music industry FinTechs and major entertainment industry multinationals.
Eoin Caulfield, Partner, Head of Insurance, William Fry
Eoin Caulfield is Head of the Insurance & Reinsurance Department. Eoin has advised a wide range of leading domestic and international financial institutions across all aspects of financial services law and regulation.
Eoin is a member of the International Bar Association’s Insurance Committee and co-editor of the Committee’s newsletter on insurance. He is a regular speaker at industry events.
Eoin is William Fry’s representative as a co-founder of InsTech.ie, the insurance industry initiative to create a tech-oriented insurance ecosystem in Ireland.
Gary Leyden, CEO, Instech
Gary is CEO of InsTech.ie, a not for profit entity established to build Ireland’s reputation as an Insurtech Hub internationally.
It aims to position Ireland as a vibrant test bed for insurance innovation and will do that by bringing together startups, insurance firms, brokers, MGA’s, investors and academia to work collaboratively together to advance insurance innovation and create value.
Gary has been a leader in the innovation and technology startup investment ecosystem for over a decade, investing in over 300 emerging Irish technology startups.
