Insurance Ireland today expressed concern about the rise in uninsured driving linked to claims

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) has today published a report highlighting an 11% increase in claims in 2023, an increase of 187 on 2022. The MIBI, which is funded by insurance premiums and assists drivers in the event they are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, underlined that this worrying trend will cost law-abiding drivers more on their premiums. On average, motorists contributed €30-€35 extra at their last renewal to cover these costs. Moyagh Murdock, CEO of Insurance Ireland said “Uninsured drivers are a danger to themselves and other road users, and it’s simply not fair that responsible drivers are having to foot the bill.” Since the end of 2023, An Garda Síochána now has daily access to insurance information for 3 million vehicles on Irish roads. This data-sharing agreement, developed in collaboration with Insurance Ireland, MIBI, An Garda Síochána and the Department of Transport, allows Gardaí to instantly check a car’s insurance status on the roadside. “We believe this new system is a game-changer in the fight against uninsured driving,” said Murdock. Insurance Ireland is committed to working with the MIBI and An Garda Síochána to tackle the issue of uninsured driving. We urge all motorists to ensure they have valid car insurance before getting behind the wheel – It’s the law.
