One year on from the Personal Injuries Commission establishing that our average award is 4.4 times that in the UK, Irish customers still do not know when reform will take place or by how much Irish personal injury awards will be reduced. Insurance Ireland is calling on Minister Charlie Flanagan to immediately commence Sections 18-22 of the Judicial Council Act which will set up the Personal Injuries Committee to recalibrate our award levels.
Insurance Ireland has written to Minister of State Michael D’Arcy T.D. outlining the public statements made by individual insurers that if the cost of claims was systematically addressed then consumers would benefit.
Following its analysis of the cost of our compensation awards last year, the independent report of the Personal Injuries Commission called for ‘a response that is effective and achievable in the shortest possible time’. However, until the key sections of the Act are commenced, the promised recalibration of awards cannot take place.
Ends.
