Insurers Warn of Unregulated Firms Selling Motor Insurance

The Irish Insurance Federation has issued the following advice to the Polish Community regarding the purchase of motor insurance.

Mike Kemp, Chief Executive, IIF said, “A few of our member companies have reported activity to us which would indicate that false motor insurance policies are being sold by unregulated intermediaries to unsuspecting customers, in particular to people within the Polish community.  Whilst this is being investigated by the Gardai we would like to advise motorists that insurance documents provided by unregulated firms are NOT valid.  Aside from the fact that driving uninsured is a criminal offence, if you are involved in an accident or damage your vehicle you will not be compensated.  If you are in doubt about the authenticity of the firm you are dealing with, you should contact the Financial Regulator to ensure that they are registered with them”.

Any person wishing to contact the Financial Regulator with information regarding such firms may telephone 1890-200-469. This line is also available to the public to check if a firm is authorised.  A list of all registered insurance intermediairies is also available on the website www.financialregulator.ie.
